Implants

Dr Jasvinder Jugdev has been involved in the field of dental implantology since qualification. He has experience of both the technical and laboratory aspects, research and, through extensive training, has gained the clinical skill required for successful implant placement. In 2014 he gained his MSc in Implant Dentistry from the University of Warwisk.

What can I do if I lose a tooth?

When teeth are lost, the bone in which they are embedded gradually disappears because it is no longer required to support the teeth. The teeth and lost bone are usually replaced by removable dentures or fixed bridges to restore you appearance, speech and chewing functions. As with all manmade substitutes for nature's living tissues, there are drawbacks to these artificial appliances. Dentures reduce your chewing efficiency and some people can suffer from poor retention no matter how well the denture is made. On the other hand, bridges involve cutting away healthy teeth in order to provide support, again this can lead to complications requiring further complex treatment at a later date.

So what are dental implants?

An alternative method of tooth replacement is to insert dental implants into the jawbone to support a false tooth or teeth. These implants become firmly attached or integrated with your own bone and act in a similar manner to a natural tooth root. If an implant is placed immediately or soon after a tooth is extracted, your jawbone is preserved and further bone loss is prevented. For this reason it is best not to delay the decision to place implants, as bone will be lost with time which can make the placement of implants more difficult.

However, even after considerable bone loss has occurred, it may still be possible to place an implant although additional bone grafting techniques may be required.

After listening to your expectations, carefully examining your mouth and taking appropriate x-rays, we will be able to advise you of your treatment alternatives and if you are a suitable candidate for this exciting dental procedure. A full written explanation and estimate of treatment options and cost will be prepared for you before you are ready to make a decision.
